<p class="elementtoproof" style="background:white"><span style="color:black">The lives of massive stars can be understood by the remnants that they leave behind—black holes and neutron stars. Over the last decade, gravitational-wave astronomy has provided a
unique probe of these stellar remnants. To gain information from gravitational waves, first we infer the properties of individual gravitational-wave sources from their signals. Then, we may combine our set of observations to infer the astrophysical distribution
of sources. These results can be used to understand the currently uncertain astrophysics of binary formation and evolution. We will discuss the current catalogue of gravitational-wave observations, and what they tell us about binary evolution. We already see
evidence of multiple formation channels, and future observations will enable precision measurements of binary formation.</span><i><span style="font-size:14.0pt;color:black;mso-fareast-language:EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
