<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:black;mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-GB">Merging compact objects in which at least one component is a neutron star can produce several observable phenomena: namely loud gravitational wave
chirp signals, radioactively powered kilonovae, and in at least some cases, relativistic jets creating bright flashes of gamma rays. These events have important implications for the heavy element nucleosynthesis budget of the universe, our understanding of
jet acceleration, precision cosmology and tests of fundamental physics ranging from the neutron star equation of state to tests of Lorentz invariance. I will review the status of this young field, highlighting some recent surprises, and consider prospects
for the coming years.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
